• HEREart Application

Application DUE October 1, 2012 by 12:00 noon.
    • About
    • HEREart provides emerging and early career visual artists and curators access to space at an active, well-located multi-arts center. We are interested in exhibitions that creatively work with our unique spaces and engage audiences with artwork that is specially curated to function within a busy environment. This focus on interactive space naturally leads HEREart to function as the center of a community of artists. HEREart encourages artist curators to expand and explore their relationship to art by providing several levels of artistic participation – from curating a large group show, exhibiting intimate works, designing work for our video wall, or participating in one of our interactive, on-going exhibits as artist, curator, or spectator. We invite proposals in all of the above areas! Applications should be for complete exhibitions. Although HEREart tends to be more interested in conceptual group shows, proposals featuring one artist's work are welcome provided that the show is conceptualized into a complete exhibition. We are not accepting submissions from solo artists which offer a single work to be exhibited unless they have a concept for our video wall. Video wall submissions will only be included with a thematic connection to a group show.

HEREart’s location as an entryway to our theatres ensures a diverse and eclectic audience will experience the art. HEREart embraces its alter ego as a lobby for HERE’s performance spaces and encourages artists to react and respond to this with their exhibits. HERE is a very appropriate place for today’s active and interactive visual art: art that often moves, makes noise, and physically engages the viewer. HEREart seeks to snag these passers-by and engage them in a dialogue with the space in which we move. HEREart is invested in supporting artworks of all media and various content (painting, sculpture, photography, drawing, collage, media) , but we concentrate on new work that in some way addresses the special conditions of our space.

Every exhibit at HERE is a site-specific installation that stretches our understanding of the words "art" and "performance," creating a multi-layered experience for our patrons that sticks with them as they move from one space to the next. HEREart presents 6-9 exhibitions annually, curated by guest curators. Exhibitions will take place between January - December 2013 and include curator-driven collaborations between artists, as well as large-scale initiatives by solo artists. We highly recommend visiting our space prior to submitting a proposal so that you can attain an understanding of the unique and dynamic nature of thespace. We encourage proposals which draw from the imagination, but keep in mind limited resources.

HEREArt will provide one art installer for one day and a $400 budget (which must include shipping and transportation costs). We will also cover the costs to promote the show via our website, dedicated e-blasts,press release, and postcards (all of which HERE will design). Lastly, we will host an opening reception with wine.
