  • UCS Athletics Online Registration

Urban Community School provides primarily low-income children from Cleveland's Near West Side with an individualized, innovative, and challenging education. Founded and sponsored by the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland, UCS is an ecumenical school in the Catholic tradition. Urban Community School is a member of the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) and thereby abides by the by-laws of CYO. The CYO by-laws can be reviewed on their website at http://ccdocle.org/cyo/about-us/charter-and-bylaws-diocese-of-cleveland. The mission of CYO is to inspire young people to know God, to love God, and to serve God through athletics. The following document sets forth the responsibilities of both parents/guardians and students to be eligible to participate in UCS athletics.

    Academics, Behavior & Attendance

Participation in athletic events contributes to the well-rounded education of students but academic success should be the student’s priority. If the student-athlete does not meet the participation requirements as set forth by the school, the parent, coach and athletic directors will be notified.

    Conduct

Student-athletes are expected to conduct themselves in a Christian manner both in school and on the athletic field/court. Whether in school or participating in athletic events, the student athlete is expected to be a positive representative of Urban Community School and conduct themselves in a manner cohesive with the mission of the school.
If a student-athlete is suspended from school, they will be ineligible to participate in athletic practices and games until they are reinstated by school administration. In-school suspensions and out-of-school suspensions will both carry the same ineligibility penalty. If a student-athlete is expelled from school, they will be prohibited from participation in UCS athletics and removed from the team roster.
Inappropriate behavior by a student athlete during an athletic event (practice or game) will be reported to the school. These behaviors include but are not limited to destruction of school or other property, harassment of players/officials/coaches, and inappropriate language. Incidences of misconduct by a student-athlete during an athletic event will be reported to the Athletic Directors and the school Principal and dealt with on an individual basis.

    Parent/Guardian Responsibilities

As parents/guardians of student-athletes, your support is appreciated in upholding the standards of the school and athletic department. The following requirements are expected from parents/guardians of student athletes:
Participation fees, emergency contact forms, signed athletic agreements and physical forms must be provided to the UCS Athletic Department prior to participating in any competition. Forms are maintained on file until after completion of the season. The UCS Athletic Department realizes circumstances exist where participation fees may cause financial hardships. We will work to offer other arrangements to accommodate families needing assistance. Participation fees or other arrangements are required to be made before a student-athlete is eligible to participate in practices or contests.
Parents/Guardians of student-athletes are responsible for holding their child(ren) to the standards of conduct. When a child receives disciplinary action from their school, parents/guardians and coaches will be notified.
Student-athletes should arrive to practice on time and ready to participate at the start time in appropriate attire. If your child will be late to practice, the coach should be notified by the parent/guardian prior to the practice out of courtesy for the coach.
Out of respect for our coach volunteers and their time and to ensure safety, student-athletes need to be picked up from practices on time. Coaches are not expected to drive student-athletes home and are not permitted to leave an athlete unattended.

Parents/guardians are responsible for contacting coaches in a timely manner when a student-athlete needs to miss a competition or practice. CYO competitions require participation of all athletes and coaches need to prepare accordingly based on the players that are active for the athletic contest. Parents/Guardians of student-athletes who fail to notify the coach of missing a practice or competition may be subject to limited participation for the next contest following the unreported absence.
Coaches at Urban Community School are certified volunteers. Please contact a UCS Athletic Director if you’re interested in becoming a coach. It takes time and dedication to teach your children. The coach needs to focus on your children and the sport at hand without distraction. Parents/Guardians are always welcome at practice in the gymnasium/practice area, but are not permitted to enter the practice area unless requested by the coach or if there is an emergency with their child. Parents/guardians and siblings are required to remain in the gym bleacher/waiting area. To protect the safety of our athletes, the only time anyone may come onto the gym floor/practice area is by request of the coach or for a medical emergency.

    Athletic Agreement

Student-athletes, parents/guardians and coaches agree to the following:

    • Academic performance takes priority over participation in athletics
    • Attendance and participation in practices, games and events is expected
    • Respect of teammates, coaches, officials, opponents and property is required
    • All parties will abide by the rules of the school, CYO, and the UCS Athletics      guidelines

    Student-athletes agree to the following:

    • Teammates and opponents are to be supported and treated with respect
    • A positive attitude will be displayed
    • Coaches lead the team, not parents/guardians

    Coaches agree to the following:

    • Behavior will reflect the values and mission of CYO and Urban Community School
    • Development and instruction will be provided equally to all student-athletes
    • Communication with parents/guardians regarding team schedules, coaching philosophy and player expectations will be provided

    Parents/guardians agree to the following:

    • Payment of participation fees and completion of all participation forms by the determined deadlines.
    • Transportation to and from practices and athletic contests and timely arrival and departure times are the
    parent’s/guardian’s responsibility
    • All uniforms loaned from UCS require proper care and must be returned by the established deadline in the same condition in which they were issued
    • Minimum playing time is determined by CYO rules. Playing time exceeding the CYO minimum is at the discretion of the coach
    • Playing time may be reduced as a result of conduct or absence from practices
    • Involvement in multiple extra-curricular activities is at the discretion of the parent/guardian
    • Inappropriate behavior or disrespect towards any individual at a CYO event may result in parent/guardian removal from future CYO events

In the event of a disagreement related to UCS Athletics, parents/guardians are requested to first make an attempt to discuss the matter with the team coach. If a resolution was unable to be met, the issue should be addressed with the UCS Athletic Directors. The UCS Athletic Directors will consult with the UCS Principal and UCS President, as necessary, to resolve the issue.

  • UCS Athletics Participation Fee

UCS Athletics participation fees provide a portion of the expense to offer athletic programming for students as a member of the CYO organization. Your support allows UCS to sustain high-quality programming for its students. That said, Urban Community School will NOT let financial limitations create a barrier for participating in athletics and will do its best to work with families needing financial assistance.
